Napa Rose - dinner - March 4, 2001

My husband and I and 7 other friends had dinner at the Napa Rose.  I had made a reservation for 5:30 (when the restaurant opens for dinner).  We arrived about 10 minutes before that and so waited in the lounge area.  We were shortly escorted to our seats, and the restaurant is just beautiful, from the high-backed chairs to the very pretty carpeting, to the fresh rose on each table that matches the color of the roses depicted on the carpeting, to the mural of the farmlands that I had the pleasure of periodically staring at throughout dinner.  Many of the lighting fixtures also echo the rose theme.  Our waiter turned out to be someone we were familiar with from the PCH Grill, so it was great to see him again.

My husband and I started by splitting one of the side salads that consisted of endive, radicchio, arugula, dried beef (it'
s not as weird as it sounded to us - they're very thin curled pieces), some kind of shaved Italian cheese and white truffle oil.  Since we had told our server that we were splitting the salad, they brought the salad already split into two plates, so that was very nice.  The salad was excellent.  For dinner, our group of 9 ended up only ordering three different dishes.  My husband and I both had the cioppino (we'd both known that we were ordering that - we had seen the menu from the outside before and that was mostly the reason we wanted to try the restaurant), two friends ordered the beef filet, and the remaining five had ordered the grilled yellowtail.  My husband and I loved the cioppino (which consisted of mussles, clams, crab and fish) and everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well.  For dessert, most of the group ordered the chocolate souffle crepes (I had a taste of my husband's and it was incredible), I ordered the lemon mousse with the side of raspberry sorbet (mmmm), and another person had a sundae.

In addition to the excellent food, the service was impeccable.  Without hovering or being obtrusive, they were always there when you needed something (sometimes just before).  While it's not a restaurant that we figure to eat at often because of the prices, I would definitely recommend it.  It's great to have a restaurant of this caliber at the resort.
